About 5 or so years after A Tribe Called Quest was created in the St. Albans area of Queens, New York, another group of 3 college kids (also in Queens) wanted to follow in their footsteps. but add one special thing- rock elements. A combination of hi-hats, drums, and electric guitar created a perfect hip-hop/rock combination. Taking some inspiration from the Beastie Boys, Rhime Rox wanted to create their own dent in the rap rock/alternative hip-hop scene. QMC Rhime, real name Shivam Matthews, wanted to create something similar to the Beastie Boys when he was young. He saw their combination of rhyme verses and rock elements and thought it was amazing. With that in mind, he got his two friends Mark Marlons, and Bing Collins together (both of whom had already had musical experience), and wanted to create a band. However, as time went on, rap began to take over further, and rap groups like A Tribe Called Quest came out with their jazz-rap hits. Seeing this, the three boys wanted to combine the rock aspects of the Beastie Boys with the more mellow, rhyme vibe of Tribe. In doing so, they created a fusion band that could go back and forth between the two. Some songs had a rap type of vibe, some songs had a rock vibe, and others switched back and forth. The group became a hit, especially among the audiences of the previously mentioned groups. Rhime Rox gets their name from the A Tribe Called Quest song "Check the Rhime", featured on their hit album The Low End Theory, released in 1992, just half a year before the group was created. Their first album, titled Rox to Live By, would be released in 1996. As time went on, Rhime Rox began to use less of this Beastie Boys formula in their music and leaned more toward the alternative and progressive hip-hop side, similar to artists like Common, or going back further, De La Soul (another slight inspiration of theirs). They even had some work with Kanye West, for a time, in the early 2000s. The group went further and further and released multiple studio albums, until their most recent album in 2014, titled Rox is Back. In this record, they tried to go back to that rap rock sound they created the group for.
